Menstrual Health Day Campaign Shines Spotlight on Period Poverty Across Canada

Toronto, ON – In recognition of Menstrual Health Day on May 28, Toronto-based charity The Period Purse has launched its annual “Menstrual Health Day is Every Day” campaign, calling on Canadians to help end period poverty and stigma through advocacy, education, and donations.

Running through June 2025, the campaign comes at a time when one in six Canadian menstruators say they’ve experienced period poverty—a lack of access to menstrual products due to financial constraints—according to a 2023 survey. In a country where only 46% of people feel comfortable talking about menstruation (Plan International Canada, 2020), The Period Purse is pushing for both access and awareness.

Founded in 2017, the charity has distributed over six million period products to people in need and delivered menstrual health education to more than 11,000 Canadians. This year’s campaign invites individuals, workplaces, and schools to:

  • Say the word “period” to help normalize menstrual health discussions.

  • Create supportive environments by providing free products in washrooms.

  • Join or start community efforts to collect or donate period products.

In a powerful visual display of solidarity, 61 landmarks across the country will be lit red on May 28, including Toronto’s CN Tower. Municipalities across Canada—46 in total—have issued official proclamations recognizing the day. Flag-raising ceremonies will be held at 9:30 a.m. at Toronto City Hall, 9 a.m. at Mississauga City Hall, and 9 a.m. ADT at the Grand Parade in Halifax.

The Period Purse encourages residents across the GTA to get involved by donating, advocating for product access in schools and workplaces, and helping to end harmful stigmas surrounding menstruation.
