Toronto Public Health Issues Measles Exposure Alert for Ripley’s Aquarium Visitors

TORONTO – Toronto Public Health (TPH) is warning the public about a potential measles exposure at Ripley’s Aquarium of Canada, one of the city’s busiest tourist destinations. The alert applies to anyone who visited the aquarium at 288 Bremner Blvd. on Monday, April 21 between 1 p.m. and 7 p.m.

The notice follows confirmation of a new measles case—the city’s third this year—in a visitor who was infectious while on-site. Measles is a highly contagious airborne virus that can linger in the air or on surfaces for up to two hours after an infected person has left the area.

✅ What You Should Do

1. Check Your Vaccination Status:
TPH urges everyone who may have been exposed to review their immunization records.

  • Two doses of the MMR vaccine (Measles, Mumps, Rubella) are recommended for those born in 1970 or later.

  • Adults unsure of their status can safely get vaccinated or take a blood test to confirm immunity.

2. Monitor for Symptoms Until May 12:
Symptoms of measles include:

  • Fever

  • Runny nose

  • Cough

  • Red eyes

  • A rash starting on the face and spreading downward

  • Koplik spots (small white spots inside the mouth)

Even vaccinated individuals are advised to remain vigilant.

3. Seek Medical Advice if Symptoms Develop:
If symptoms appear, call your healthcare provider before visiting a clinic or hospital. Inform them of potential measles exposure so precautions can be taken. Wear a well-fitting mask to reduce potential transmission.

🧪 About Measles

Measles can cause serious complications, particularly in young children, pregnant individuals, and those with weakened immune systems. While rare in Canada thanks to vaccination programs, international travel has led to recent cases in urban centres like Toronto.

TPH continues to monitor the situation and update exposure locations at toronto.ca/measles.
