🇨🇦 Canada Mourns the Passing of Marc Garneau, Trailblazing Astronaut and Public Servant

PM Carney honours Garneau’s extraordinary legacy of service and leadership

OTTAWA — Tributes are pouring in following the passing of the Honourable Marc Garneau, a pioneering astronaut, decorated naval officer, and long-serving Member of Parliament, whose life embodied Canada’s highest ideals of public service, innovation, and humility.

In a heartfelt statement, Prime Minister Mark Carney praised Garneau as a national icon and a symbol of inspiration for generations of Canadians.

“Marc made history as the first Canadian in space, inspiring a generation with his courage and intellect,” said Carney. “He believed in progress, in science, in integrity, and in humility.”

🚀 From the Stars to Parliament Hill

Garneau first captured the nation’s imagination in 1984 when he became the first Canadian to travel into space aboard NASA’s Challenger mission. A Companion of the Order of Canada, he went on to lead the Canadian Space Agency, before transitioning to federal politics in 2008.

He was elected as the Member of Parliament for Notre-Dame-de-Grâce—Westmount and later served in senior cabinet positions, including as Minister of Transport and Minister of Foreign Affairs. He was known for his calm presence, technical expertise, and focus on results.

🛡️ A Legacy of Service and Diplomacy

During his time in Cabinet, Garneau advanced numerous national priorities—from aviation security in conflict zones to international diplomacy, including negotiations to secure the release of Canadians Michael Kovrig and Michael Spavor from detention in China.

His decades of service in the Royal Canadian Navy, space exploration, and public office reflect what Carney described as “leadership, focus, and quiet strength.”

“To Canadians, he was a symbol of national pride and possibility,” Carney noted.

💬 A Nation Reflects

As Canadians reflect on Garneau’s passing, colleagues and citizens alike are remembering his deep commitment to country, science, and public trust.

Prime Minister Carney extended condolences to Garneau’s family, friends, and all Canadians who found inspiration in his groundbreaking journey.
