Senators Rally Late to Edge Maple Leafs 3–2 in Overtime

Toronto falls at Scotiabank Arena despite strong outing from Hildeby

TORONTO — The Toronto Maple Leafs dropped a 3–2 overtime decision to the Ottawa Senators on Tuesday night at Scotiabank Arena, as Shane Pinto scored twice — including the game-winner just 16 seconds into overtime — to hand the visitors their first preseason win.

Toronto opened the scoring early when Auston Matthews buried a setup from Oliver Ekman-Larsson and Matias Maccelli at 4:24 of the first period. Bobby McMann extended the lead late in the frame with a power-play marker, assisted by Easton Cowan and Maccelli, giving the Leafs a 2–0 cushion through twenty minutes.

Ottawa stormed back in the third. Fabian Zetterlund capitalized shorthanded at 7:33, cutting the deficit in half, before Pinto struck on the power play with just over two minutes remaining to tie it 2–2. Pinto then completed the comeback seconds into overtime, converting a feed from Michael Amadio to seal the 3–2 win.

Dennis Hildeby was steady in the Toronto net, stopping all 23 shots he faced through two periods to earn second-star honours. Artur Akhtyamov took over for the final frame and overtime, making 15 saves on 18 shots.

The Leafs went 1-for-5 on the power play, while Ottawa finished 1-for-3 with the man advantage. Attendance was 15,162.

What It Means

Despite the overtime loss, Toronto’s top line found early rhythm, highlighted by Matthews’ first goal of the preseason and Maccelli’s two-assist performance. Goaltending remained a bright spot, with Hildeby continuing a strong exhibition campaign as Toronto builds toward its regular-season roster decisions.
