Major snowstorm and significant weather event declarations set to end in Toronto

Major Snowstorm Condition Toronto measures helped speed up winter road and sidewalk clearing

TORONTO — The City of Toronto has confirmed that the Major Snowstorm Condition and Significant Weather Event declarations will officially end at 5 p.m. today, following several days of intensified winter maintenance operations across the city.

The declarations were first activated on Thursday, January 15, allowing the City to deploy enhanced snow-clearing measures during the severe winter storm.

Why the declarations were activated

The emergency declarations enabled the City to prohibit parking on designated snow routes, giving crews full access to roads, sidewalks and bike lanes. This temporary measure improved the speed and effectiveness of plowing and snow removal operations at the height of the storm.

According to the City, these steps were necessary to maintain mobility, safety and access for residents, emergency services and transit.

Snow removal efforts continue in high-priority areas

Although the emergency measures are ending, targeted snow removal — including hauling away accumulated snow piles — will continue across Toronto.

Crews remain focused on:

  • Major transit corridors

  • School loading zones

  • Areas requiring improved accessibility

  • Locations identified as high priority for future snowfall capacity

City officials say this work is critical to keeping streets clear and preparing for additional winter weather.

Parking restrictions remain in effect where posted

Drivers are reminded to obey temporary orange “No Parking – Snow Removal” signs, which indicate snow removal is scheduled within 24 hours of posting.

Vehicles parked in these zones may be ticketed or towed at the owner’s expense. The City encourages residents to use off-street parking when possible to support efficient cleanup operations.

How residents can report snow-related concerns

The City of Toronto continues to accept 311 service requests for snow and ice cleanup. Residents can report problem areas:

  • By calling 311

  • Through the City’s website

  • Using the 311 Toronto mobile app

City officials say resident feedback helps crews respond more effectively as winter maintenance continues.
