Kariya Park Cherry Blossoms Begin Blooming in Mississauga

Kariya Park cherry blossoms are expected to reach peak bloom as visitors return to Mississauga’s Japanese-inspired garden oasis

MISSISSAUGA — One of Mississauga’s most recognizable spring attractions is beginning to bloom as cherry blossom trees at Kariya Park enter sakura season.

The City of Mississauga says the nearly 80 Japanese cherry blossom trees at Kariya Park are expected to reach peak bloom over the next two weeks, depending on weather conditions.

Located in the heart of downtown Mississauga, the Japanese-inspired park draws visitors every spring as pink blossoms transform the landscape into one of the city’s most photographed seasonal destinations.

A Symbol of Mississauga’s Connection to Japan

Kariya Park was created to celebrate Mississauga’s sister-city relationship with Kariya, Japan, a partnership that dates back to 1981.

The park features four varieties of cherry blossom trees gifted through that relationship, alongside Japanese-inspired landscaping and cultural elements designed to reflect traditional Japanese gardens.

Visitors exploring the park during bloom season can also experience:

  • A stone tsukabai basin hand-carved by Japanese sculptor Fumio Naito
  • A zig-zag boardwalk crossing a marsh filled with Japanese irises
  • A cascade waterfall surrounded by Japanese maple trees
  • A dry stream bed designed to symbolize flowing water
  • A duck pond featuring a turtle rock sculpture
  • The Friendship Bell located inside the pavilion

The park is also home to a variety of plant species including magnolias, rhododendrons, pines, sweetgum trees and ginkgo trees.

Planning a Visit During Peak Bloom

City officials say cherry blossoms in Mississauga typically reach full bloom after several consecutive days of temperatures around 15 degrees Celsius.

Kariya Park is open daily from 7 a.m. to 11 p.m., though parking at the site is limited.

Visitors are encouraged to walk, cycle or use MiWay transit to access the park. Additional paid parking is available nearby on Kariya Drive and at Municipal Parking Lot #36.

Park Etiquette During Sakura Season

The City is reminding visitors to help preserve the cherry blossoms and surrounding environment during bloom season by:

  • Staying on pathways and trails
  • Avoiding climbing or pulling branches from trees
  • Properly disposing of garbage and recycling
  • Respecting wildlife in the park
  • Leaving dogs at home, as dogs are not permitted in Kariya Park

Officials also note that the blossoms only last for a short period each spring, typically no more than two weeks depending on rainfall and wind conditions.

Additional cherry blossom viewing locations in Mississauga include Brueckner Rhododendron Gardens, St. Lawrence Park and Mississauga Valley.
