J.P. Wiser’s Unveils 27-Year-Old Mizunara Oak Whisky, a Landmark in Canadian Craftsmanship
Limited edition release marks Canada’s first whisky fully matured in Japanese Mizunara oak casks
TORONTO — J.P. Wiser’s, one of Canada’s most celebrated whisky brands, has launched what may be its most exceptional creation yet: a 27-Year-Old Canadian Whisky finished entirely in Japanese Mizunara oak casks. With only 1,000 bottles produced nationwide, this rare release represents a fusion of Canadian innovation and Japanese tradition — and sets a new global benchmark for craftsmanship in whisky making.
Developed by Master Blender Dr. Don Livermore at the Hiram Walker & Sons Distillery in Windsor, Ontario, this latest expression embodies 27 years of maturation and an extraordinary finishing process. Unlike most distilleries that use small Mizunara oak inserts, J.P. Wiser’s has matured this whisky in full Mizunara casks, an exceptionally rare and challenging feat due to the tree’s unique structure and limited supply.
“We set out to create something truly extraordinary,” said Dr. Don Livermore. “To see our whisky finished in Mizunara oak hold its own among the rarest spirits in the world is a proud moment not just for me as a blender, but for Canadian whisky as a whole. It’s a collector’s piece — a celebration of time, tradition, and risk-taking.”
The Mizunara oak tree, native to Japan, takes between 150 and 200 years to mature, and its irregular grain makes it notoriously difficult to work with. Yet, its influence on flavour is profound. The J.P. Wiser’s Mizunara Oak delivers deep, layered notes of plum, fig, sandalwood, almond, black tea, and honey, offering a bold and complex palate with a cask-strength finish.
Maura Cowan, Vice President of Marketing at Corby Spirit and Wine, which owns the J.P. Wiser’s brand, says the release is a statement of global ambition:
“This whisky is proof that Canadian craftsmanship belongs on the world stage. It shows our confidence and creativity, and it celebrates what’s possible when heritage meets innovation.”
The J.P. Wiser’s Mizunara Oak 27-Year-Old will be available beginning October 3, 2025, through the J.P. Wiser’s online store and select liquor retailers across Canada. The release is priced at $599.95 CAD — reflecting both its age and the rarity of its full Mizunara oak cask finish.
