Ignite Durham Learning Foundation Wins Non-Profit of the Year at the Pearl Gala Business Awards

Award celebrates the organization’s decade-long mission to support students in need across Durham Region

OSHAWA, ON — The Ignite Durham Learning Foundation (IDLF) has been recognized as Non-Profit of the Year at the Greater Oshawa Chamber of Commerce’s Pearl Gala Business Awards, honouring its ongoing work to support students and families across Durham Region.

Founded in 2014 as part of the Durham District School Board’s (DDSB) Make A Difference Poverty Strategy, IDLF was created to break down barriers to learning for students facing poverty. Over the past decade, the Foundation has helped ensure that children have access to food, clothing, technology, and extracurricular experiences—essentials that help them thrive both inside and outside the classroom.

“This award is deeply meaningful because it’s not just about IDLF,” said Stacey Lepine-Fisher, Executive Director of the Foundation. “It’s about the vision, courage, and commitment that began long before our Foundation even existed. This recognition belongs to everyone who has stood with us to face the realities of poverty and its impact on students.”

Neil Joshi, Chair of IDLF, echoed that sentiment, adding that the honour reflects the shared dedication of the Foundation’s staff, volunteers, and community supporters.

“From our Board of Directors and Fundraising Committee to our incredible staff and donors, this award belongs to all of us,” said Joshi.

The Foundation highlighted the key contributors who make its mission possible — from DDSB Trustees and school leaders to local volunteers and donors — emphasizing that collective community action is central to its success.

“Our community is stronger, our students are supported, and their futures are brighter,” Lepine-Fisher added. “This award truly belongs to all of us.”

The Greater Oshawa Chamber of Commerce’s Pearl Gala celebrated local organizations that have demonstrated leadership, innovation, and measurable community impact.

The Ignite Durham Learning Foundation continues to provide critical support to students experiencing poverty, helping ensure every child in Durham Region has the resources needed to succeed in school and beyond.
