Honourable James O’Reilly Appointed as Senate Ethics Officer
OTTAWA, ON – Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has announced the appointment of the Honourable James O’Reilly as Canada’s next Senate Ethics Officer. Approved by the Senate, Mr. O’Reilly’s appointment will take effect on January 10, 2025, succeeding Pierre Legault, who is set to retire.
With a distinguished legal career spanning more than two decades, Mr. O’Reilly brings extensive expertise to the role. Appointed as a judge of the Federal Court in 2002 and the Court Martial Appeal Court in 2003, he has also held positions at the Law Commission of Canada, the Department of Justice, and the Supreme Court of Canada. In addition to his judicial responsibilities, Mr. O’Reilly is a published author and has taught law at universities across Canada.
As Senate Ethics Officer, Mr. O’Reilly will oversee the administration, interpretation, and application of the Ethics and Conflict of Interest Code for Senators. This includes providing guidance and advice to Senators on ethical matters.
Prime Minister Trudeau commended Mr. O’Reilly’s qualifications, stating, “I congratulate the Honourable James O’Reilly on his appointment as the next Senate Ethics Officer. His impressive legal career will make him an invaluable advisor to members of the Red Chamber.”
The Prime Minister also expressed gratitude to outgoing Senate Ethics Officer Pierre Legault for his years of dedicated service.
Mr. O’Reilly’s appointment comes at a time when public confidence in government ethics remains a priority, and his experience is expected to contribute to maintaining the integrity of Senate operations.
