Highway 7 Expansion to Boost Connectivity and Economic Growth in the GTA
PICKERING – The Ontario government’s announcement of a $12 million investment to widen Highway 7 from Reesor Road in Markham to Brock Road in Pickering has sparked optimism for improved connectivity and economic growth in the Greater Toronto Area (GTA).
The expansion, which will see the highway transition from two to four lanes, aims to alleviate traffic congestion and support the burgeoning manufacturing, life sciences, and agricultural sectors in the region. With approximately 8,500 vehicles traversing this stretch of Highway 7 daily, the need for enhanced infrastructure has become increasingly evident.
Prabmeet Sarkaria, Minister of Transportation, highlighted the importance of the project, stating, “As Durham and York Region continue to grow, our government is standing up for drivers to keep them moving and out of gridlock.”
I was proud to stand alongside @PrabSarkaria as we announced that the province is providing $12 million over four years to widen 10.4 kilometres of Highway 7 from two to four lanes.

The investment will primarily fund preliminary design and environmental assessment work for the 10.4-kilometer expansion project, along with improvements to local intersections and the expansion of the Little Rouge Creek bridge in Markham.
Local officials have welcomed the initiative, emphasizing its potential to foster economic growth and improve connectivity between communities. Peter Bethlenfalvy, MPP for Pickering-Uxbridge, remarked, “The expansion of Highway 7 brings more than just widened roads; it paves the way for enhanced connectivity, economic growth, and smoother commutes for residents and businesses alike.”
The project’s significance extends beyond mere infrastructure development, as it aligns with the government’s broader commitment to invest nearly $100 billion over the next decade in highways, roads, and public transit, aiming to accommodate the anticipated population growth in the Greater Golden Horseshoe region.
In response to the announcement, local leaders have expressed their support for the initiative. Paul Calandra, MPP for Markham-Stouffville, stressed the strategic importance of the project for economic infrastructure, while Kevin Ashe, Mayor of Pickering, commended the province for recognizing the need to upgrade roads and infrastructure to accommodate the region’s growth.
Frank Scarpitti, Mayor of Markham, echoed similar sentiments, applauding the provincial government’s investment in improving the road network and emphasizing the project’s potential to enhance connectivity, road safety, and economic growth.
The Highway 7 expansion represents a significant step forward in Ontario’s infrastructure development efforts, poised to bolster connectivity and drive economic prosperity in the GTA and surrounding regions.
