Ontario Enhancing Road Safety With New Highway 62 Roundabout in Prince Edward County
Highway 62 Roundabout Planned for Prince Edward County
PRINCE EDWARD COUNTY — Ontario is moving ahead with plans to improve road safety and traffic flow in Prince Edward County by building a new roundabout at the intersection of Highway 62 and County Road 1, a project the province says will also support local jobs and economic resilience.
The Ontario government has awarded a contract for the detailed design of the roundabout, marking a key step toward construction. The work will include reconstructing existing pavement, modifying entrances, improving drainage, and installing new lighting and landscaping.
“Our government is investing $30 billion to build the highway infrastructure we need to keep our province moving forward,” said Ric Bresee, Parliamentary Assistant to the Minister of Transportation. “The new roundabout at Highway 62 and County Road 1 continues our plan to deliver safe, reliable roads that hardworking Ontarians can depend on as we expand our highway network across the province.”
Addressing Local Safety Concerns
The intersection has long been identified as a safety concern by residents and local officials, with traffic volumes and collision risks prompting calls for improvements.
“We’ve heard from our community that a roundabout at the corner of Hwy. 62 and County Rd. 1 would be a welcomed safety initiative to reduce the potential for collisions at that site,” said Tyler Allsopp, MPP for Bay of Quinte. “The detailed design work is an important final step before tendering the construction. I’m pleased that our government is helping us move one step closer to getting shovels in the ground.”
Economic and Infrastructure Investment
Ontario says the project is part of its broader $30-billion investment to build, repair, and expand highways, roads, and bridges across the province. Provincial data shows Ontario’s roads have ranked among the safest in North America for more than two decades, with one of the lowest fatality rates per 10,000 licensed drivers.
Industry groups also welcomed the project, citing both safety and economic benefits.
“RCCAO applauds the Ontario government’s investment in safer, more efficient road infrastructure with the new roundabout at Highway 62 and County Road 1,” said Nadia Todorova, Executive Director of the Residential and Civil Construction Alliance of Ontario. “Projects like this not only improve traffic flow and safety but also create good-paying jobs and strengthen local economies.”
The Ontario Sewer and Watermain Construction Association also emphasized the importance of modernizing transportation infrastructure.
“Today’s milestone is another example of Ontario’s commitment to modernizing its transportation network,” said Patrick McManus, Executive Director of OSWCA. “The Highway 62 roundabout will improve safety for drivers and pedestrians while supporting economic growth through construction jobs and infrastructure upgrades.”
Local Impact in Prince Edward County
Prince Edward County Mayor Steve Ferguson said the project responds to long-standing community concerns.
“Advancing the Highway 62 and County Road 1 roundabout project to the detailed design stage is an important milestone for our community,” Ferguson said. “This project will address the long-standing safety concerns at this intersection. We’re grateful for the provincial support of this critical project and ongoing investments in Prince Edward County’s transportation infrastructure.”
