Halton Hills to Unveil Veterans Commemorative Crosswalk in Georgetown
New crosswalk near Remembrance Park will honour veterans and Canadian Armed Forces personnel
HALTON HILLS — The Town of Halton Hills will officially unveil a new Veterans Commemorative Crosswalk in Georgetown later this month to recognize the sacrifices and service of Canadian veterans and active military personnel.
The public ceremony is scheduled for Wednesday, May 27 at 5 p.m. at the intersection of Princess Anne Drive and Charles Street South, near Remembrance Park.
Town officials say the commemorative crosswalk was created in partnership with the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 120 and is intended to serve as a permanent public tribute to those who served Canada.
If weather conditions require postponement, the ceremony will instead take place on Thursday, May 28 at 5 p.m.
Ceremony to feature municipal and Legion leaders
The unveiling event will include remarks from:
- Halton Hills Mayor Ann Lawlor
- Brad Gillies, President of Royal Canadian Legion Branch 120
Town staff worked alongside local Legion members to help bring the commemorative project to completion.
“I’m very encouraged that the Town acknowledged the importance of this initiative,” Gillies said in a statement released by the Town.
“The municipality supported the project by covering the installation costs, and I truly appreciate this contribution to our streetscape. It’s rewarding to see this project come to fruition and recognize the sacrifice of veterans and the contributions of the Canadian Legion.”
Mayor Lawlor said the project is intended to help preserve local remembrance efforts and honour military service.
“It’s important to recognize, cherish and preserve our history,” Lawlor stated.
“This dedicated crosswalk will serve as a reminder of our veterans and our armed forces personnel who maintain Canada’s liberties and peace.”
Road closures planned during installation and ceremony
To support installation work and the unveiling event, several temporary road and parking closures will be implemented in Georgetown.
The Town says:
- Princess Anne Drive will close between Charles Street North and Charles Street South beginning Monday, May 25 at 9 p.m. until Wednesday, May 27 at 7 p.m.
- The Edith Street parking lot will close May 27 from 6 a.m. to 7 p.m. to provide parking for veterans attending the event
Municipal officials are asking residents and motorists for patience during the temporary closures.
Growing trend of veterans commemorative infrastructure
Veterans commemorative crosswalks have become increasingly common in communities across Ontario and Canada as municipalities look for new public ways to honour military service and remembrance traditions.
The Georgetown installation adds Halton Hills to a growing list of municipalities incorporating remembrance-themed infrastructure into public spaces and streetscapes.
The Town says the project reflects ongoing community efforts to preserve local military history and recognize veterans’ contributions for future generations.
