Halton Hills Proclaims ‘Talk to a Stranger Week’ to Support National Connection Campaign

Halton Hills Talk to a Stranger Week encourages residents to build small daily connections as part of a national GenWell campaign to reduce social isolation.

HALTON HILLS — The Town of Halton Hills has officially proclaimed November 24–30, 2025 as Talk to a Stranger Week, joining municipalities across Canada in supporting GenWell’s national movement to strengthen human connection and combat rising social isolation.

The proclamation encourages residents to embrace brief, everyday interactions — a greeting, a smile, or a short conversation. According to research cited by GenWell, people who speak to strangers at least once per week report being up to three times happier, with nearly all participants expressing they were glad the interaction happened.

Mayor Ann Lawlor said the initiative aligns with the Town’s longstanding identity as a welcoming, close-knit community.

“Halton Hills is known for its welcoming spirit and strong sense of community,” said Mayor Lawlor. “By proclaiming Talk to a Stranger Week, we’re inviting everyone to take a moment to connect—whether it’s with a neighbour, a barista, or someone you meet on a walk. These small acts of kindness and curiosity can brighten our days, strengthen our community, and remind us that we all belong. Let’s show what ‘Small Town Living at its Best’ truly means—one conversation at a time.”

A National Invitation to Build Healthy Connection Habits

Talk to a Stranger Week is part of a broader effort led by GenWell, a Canadian non-profit dedicated to improving social health nationwide. The campaign encourages residents to create new habits around connection, especially as communities continue to address the long-term social impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Through the proclamation, Halton Hills is amplifying the message locally and inviting residents to participate in meaningful acts of connection throughout the week. Community members can also share stories and experiences at talktoastrangerweek.org as part of the national campaign.
