Halton Hills Mayor Highlights Volunteer Impact Ahead of National Volunteer Week
Halton Hills National Volunteer Week 2026 highlights community impact and civic engagement
The Town of Halton Hills is preparing to celebrate National Volunteer Week from April 19 to 25, with Mayor Ann Lawlor recognizing the vital role volunteers play in strengthening the community.
In her April 2026 message, originally published in Halton Hills Today, Mayor Lawlor emphasized this year’s theme, “Ignite Volunteerism,” which encourages residents to become more engaged in civic life while celebrating those who already contribute their time and energy.
Recognizing Community Contributions
Mayor Lawlor highlighted the contributions of local volunteers, including Nicola Gauntley, who was recently awarded the Key to the Town after being named Citizen of the Year by the Georgetown Lions Club.
Gauntley has spent more than a decade volunteering in local schools, supporting literacy programs and helping students with reading and writing. Her work also extends across several community organizations, including the Georgetown Hospital Foundation, Food4Kids Halton, and Cancer Assistance Halton Hills, as well as local initiatives such as the Georgetown Bread Basket and Hillsview Active Living Centre.
Encouraging Civic Participation
The Mayor’s message calls on residents to consider volunteering, noting that even small acts of service can make a meaningful difference.
Halton Hills offers a wide range of volunteer opportunities, from youth sports coaching and heritage preservation to community events such as the Santa Claus Parade and Canada Day celebrations.
A Measurable Impact
According to the Town, more than 500 volunteers contributed over 36,000 hours in the past year alone. Based on minimum wage estimates, this represents a contribution valued at more than half a million dollars.
Volunteers also support key municipal programs, including aquatics, camps, galleries, trail systems, children’s programming and services for seniors and youth.
Building a Stronger Community
Town officials say National Volunteer Week provides an opportunity to recognize the individuals and organizations that help drive community engagement and support essential services.
As celebrations approach, the Town is encouraging residents to thank volunteers and explore opportunities to get involved.
