Halton Hills Reminds Residents of Fireworks Ban Ahead of Victoria Day Weekend

Halton Hills fireworks ban remains in effect ahead of Victoria Day weekend

HALTON HILLS — With the Victoria Day long weekend approaching on May 18, 2026, the Town of Halton Hills is reminding residents that family-style, low-hazard fireworks remain prohibited under the municipality’s by-law.

The ban applies to both the use and sale of consumer fireworks, reinforcing a policy introduced last year following extensive public consultation and council deliberation.

Fireworks Ban Remains in Effect

Town officials say the by-law aligns Halton Hills with a growing number of municipalities across Ontario that have moved to restrict personal fireworks use.

Under the current rules:

  • Family or consumer fireworks are not permitted
  • Sparklers remain allowed
  • Display fireworks are only permitted at approved public events and require a permit
  • Only federally certified fireworks technicians are authorized to handle display fireworks

Mayor Ann Lawlor said the decision reflects community priorities around safety and quality of life.

“The issue of banning fireworks was widely discussed with residents,” Lawlor said. “Ultimately Council chose to prohibit fireworks in favour of safety, neighbourhood quiet, the environment and protection of animals. A year later, knowing what we know now, I feel Council made the right decision.”

Focus on Safety, Environment and Community Impact

The Town says the by-law is intended to reduce risks associated with personal fireworks use, including fire hazards, injuries, noise disturbances and impacts on pets and wildlife.

Municipal officials are encouraging residents to explore alternative ways to celebrate the holiday, particularly by attending organized public events where permitted fireworks displays are conducted safely under regulated conditions.

What Residents Should Know

As part of ongoing enforcement efforts, residents are reminded that violations of the fireworks by-law could result in penalties. The Town is also urging the public to familiarize themselves with local regulations ahead of the long weekend.

More information on fireworks rules and permits is available through the Town of Halton Hills website.

Looking Ahead to the Long Weekend

Victoria Day remains one of the busiest weekends for fireworks-related activity across Ontario. In Halton Hills, officials say compliance with the by-law is essential to maintaining a safe and respectful environment for all residents.
