Halton Hills Urges Residents to Prepare for Emergencies Ahead of National Awareness Week

Halton Hills Emergency Preparedness Week highlights safety planning and community awareness

Residents in Halton Hills are being encouraged to take proactive steps to prepare for emergencies as part of Emergency Preparedness Week, taking place from May 3 to 9, 2026.

The annual campaign, led by all levels of government along with community organizations and businesses, aims to raise awareness about potential risks and the importance of planning ahead. This year’s theme, “Be Prepared. Know Your Risks.”, highlights the need for households to understand local hazards and be ready for unexpected situations.

Seasonal Risks Highlight Need for Preparedness

Local officials say weather-related risks remain a key concern in Halton Hills, particularly during seasonal transitions.

Bruce Morrison, Deputy Chief of the Halton Hills Fire Department, noted that spring conditions can bring a range of hazards, including flooding in low-lying areas, slippery roads and strong winds that may lead to fallen tree branches or downed hydro lines.

“We live in an area where weather-related events offer a high probability for hazards,” Morrison said, emphasizing the importance of planning and communication within households.

What Should Be in an Emergency Plan

Residents are encouraged to develop or update their emergency plans ahead of time. According to the Town, a comprehensive plan should include:

  • Communication strategies for family members
  • Evacuation procedures and designated meeting places
  • Arrangements for pet care
  • Fire prevention and safety measures
  • Knowledge of utility shutoffs
  • Safe storage of important documents

Emergency planning resources are available for download through the Town’s website, with printed copies also accessible at municipal arenas and the Gellert Community Centre during the awareness week.

Community Approach to Preparedness

Mayor Ann Lawlor emphasized the importance of a collective approach to emergency preparedness, encouraging residents to not only prepare their own households but also support others in the community.

“Being prepared works best when we all work together to support one another,” Lawlor said, urging residents to check in on neighbours who may need additional assistance, including seniors, people with disabilities and pet owners.

Encouraging Broader Awareness

Emergency Preparedness Week serves as a reminder that emergencies can happen at any time, and preparation plays a critical role in minimizing risks and ensuring safety.

Officials say even simple steps—such as having a plan in place and discussing it with family members—can make a significant difference during an emergency.
