Groundbreaking Ceremony Marks the Start of Construction for Prince Edward County Memorial Hospital

Picton, ON — A significant milestone for healthcare in the Bay of Quinte region was celebrated today as construction commenced on the new Prince Edward County Memorial Hospital. This state-of-the-art facility promises to bring enhanced medical services and cutting-edge technology to the local community, ensuring residents have access to top-tier healthcare close to home.

The new hospital, a cornerstone of Ontario’s healthcare expansion initiative, is set to include a larger 24-hour emergency department, 23 in-patient beds, modern surgical suites, and comprehensive outpatient care services. These advancements will enable the hospital to provide a higher standard of care and meet the growing needs of the community.

Deputy Premier and Minister of Health Sylvia Jones highlighted the government’s commitment to improving healthcare infrastructure across Ontario. “Under the leadership of Premier Ford, our government is making historic investments in healthcare. The new Prince Edward County Memorial Hospital is another example of how we are addressing the healthcare needs of Ontario’s growing communities, ensuring we deliver the highest standard of care for decades to come.”

To date, the Ontario government has allocated $10 million in capital funding for the construction of the new hospital. This investment is part of a broader strategy to enhance healthcare accessibility and efficiency across the province.

Todd Smith, MPP for Bay of Quinte, expressed his enthusiasm and gratitude at the groundbreaking ceremony. “Today marks the culmination of years of advocacy and planning. We put our shovels in the ground together to build a state-of-the-art hospital for Prince Edward County. It’s a terrific moment for healthcare in our community. I’m grateful to Quinte Health for its leadership and the many Back the Build partners who rose to the challenge in support of this project. Our Minister of Health Sylvia Jones has recognized this steadfast determination, and our government has given its approval for construction. I’m very much looking forward to the grand opening.”

The new facility will also feature advanced medical services, including dialysis treatments, diagnostic imaging, and minor surgical procedures such as endoscopies. These services will significantly enhance the quality of care available to local residents and reduce the need for them to travel long distances for medical treatment.

This construction is part of the “Your Health: A Plan For Connected and Convenient Care” initiative, which aims to make healthcare more accessible and efficient across Ontario. The plan includes over 50 hospital projects that will add 3,000 new hospital beds over the next decade, in addition to the 3,500 beds added since 2020.

As the community eagerly anticipates the completion of the new hospital, today’s groundbreaking ceremony marks a crucial step towards a brighter future for healthcare in Prince Edward County. With enhanced facilities and expanded services, the new Prince Edward County Memorial Hospital is poised to become a vital healthcare hub for the region, delivering exceptional care to residents for generations to come.
