Greener Homes Halton Hills Launches to Help Residents Cut Energy Costs

Greener Homes Halton Hills program offers free energy coaching and virtual home assessments to reduce energy bills

The Town of Halton Hills has officially launched Greener Homes Halton Hills, a new initiative designed to help homeowners improve energy efficiency, lower utility bills and reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

Announced February 26, the program is delivered in partnership with Windfall Ecology Centre and provides residents with free, impartial home energy coaching services by phone or video. Participants also receive complimentary access to the Virtual Home Energy Assessment Tool (vHEAT), which allows homeowners to evaluate potential upgrades and estimate long-term savings.

The initiative is available to residents living in low-rise homes — including detached, semi-detached houses, townhouses and multi-unit buildings up to three storeys — within Halton Hills. While the program primarily targets low-rise residential properties, residents in larger buildings can still access guidance on reducing energy use.

What the Program Offers

Through Greener Homes Halton Hills, residents can:

  • Identify which energy retrofits best suit their homes

  • Access available rebates to offset retrofit costs

  • Explore low- and no-cost strategies to reduce energy consumption

  • Review and compare contractor quotes

  • Learn about energy-efficient technologies and equipment

  • Understand financing options

  • Model projected energy bill savings

Mayor Ann Lawlor said the program aims to remove uncertainty for homeowners looking to make climate-friendly upgrades.

“This project will help residents save money on energy bills, access rebates and take the guesswork out of which retrofits are best suited to their homes,” said Mayor Lawlor. “By taking action, residents will reduce greenhouse gas emissions and contribute to improved climate resiliency, supporting an energy-efficient Halton Hills.”

Examples of Eligible Upgrades

Home retrofits can range from major investments to simple adjustments. Larger upgrades may include:

  • Installing a heat pump

  • Adding solar panels

  • Replacing an older water heater with a high-efficiency model

  • Improving insulation or upgrading windows

Lower-cost measures include installing smart thermostats, sealing drafty windows and adjusting energy-use habits.

By combining technical guidance with rebate navigation and savings projections, the program aims to support homeowners in making informed decisions about improving comfort and efficiency while contributing to the Town’s broader climate goals.

Residents can access more information and book a free energy coach through the Town’s website at haltonhills.ca/greenerhomeshaltonhills.

Halton Hills, home to approximately 60,000 residents across Georgetown, Acton and several surrounding communities, continues to prioritize sustainability initiatives as part of its long-term planning and environmental stewardship strategy.
