Gerdau Whitby Brings Heart and Hospitality to West Lynde Public School with School-Wide Lunch
DURHAM REGION – In a moment of generosity that rippled through the hallways of West Lynde Public School, the team at Gerdau Whitby delivered more than just a hot meal—they delivered a message of support, inclusion, and community spirit.
Organized in collaboration with the Ignite Durham Learning Foundation (IDLF), Gerdau Whitby provided a nutritious lunch for every student and staff member at the school, reinforcing their commitment to student well-being and the local public education system.
“There’s nothing more rewarding than knowing our efforts are helping young people feel seen, cared for, and supported,” said Amy Blakeley, a representative from Gerdau Whitby. “It’s a privilege to give back.”
🧡 More Than a Meal
The lunch became a powerful symbol of connection. For students, it was a joyful, shared experience of celebration and inclusion. For staff, it served as a reminder that the school is part of a broader network of community partners who care.
Many Gerdau employees who participated in the event have personal ties to West Lynde, making the day especially meaningful. Whether donating time or resources, their aim was clear: to ensure every student has an equal opportunity to thrive.
🏫 Community in Action
West Lynde PS Principal Stacey Christopher, Trustee Michelle Arseneault, and Superintendent Margaret Lazarus were present for the celebration, reflecting the shared commitment across sectors to student success.
As part of its mission, the Ignite Durham Learning Foundation supports students experiencing poverty by addressing barriers such as food insecurity, clothing, and access to education.
“When businesses, educators, and families come together, we create the conditions for all students to learn, grow, and thrive,” IDLF said in a statement.
