Faster Commutes Ahead: West Harbour GO Station Upgrades Complete, Cutting Travel Time Between Niagara and Toronto

HAMILTON — Commuters in the Greater Toronto and Hamilton Area can expect a faster ride thanks to the newly completed upgrades at West Harbour GO Station. The Ontario government announced Wednesday that the construction project, part of a larger effort to enhance GO Transit service across the Greater Golden Horseshoe, is now complete — and with it, a major time savings for Niagara Region riders.

The upgrades connect West Harbour directly to the main Lakeshore West line, eliminating a previous dead-end track setup that forced trains to reverse in and out of the station. This change is expected to shave up to 15 minutes off roundtrips for more than 250,000 riders from Niagara Falls and St. Catharines each year.

“As we work to expand GO Service across the region, the completion of West Harbour Station means faster, more convenient and more frequent GO train options,” said Prabmeet Sarkaria, Ontario’s Minister of Transportation. “Our government is making historic investments to expand transit and build for the future.”

The improvements will allow all GO trains travelling to and from Niagara Falls — including weekend and off-peak service — to stop at West Harbour, increasing access and flexibility for riders. The move sets the stage for future expansions as well, including the forthcoming Confederation GO Station in east Hamilton.

Niagara West MPP Sam Oosterhoff highlighted the regional benefits, noting that the upgrades will “save Niagara commuters more than an hour a week” and support continued service expansion toward Grimsby. Metrolinx Interim President and CEO Michael Lindsay added that customers travelling between Niagara, Hamilton, and Toronto will soon enjoy more trip options and year-round access to popular destinations.

The Lakeshore West schedule will be updated in the coming weeks, once testing on the new track is complete.
