Exploring Mississauga’s Multi-Use Trails: A Safe and Enjoyable Experience

Mississauga, ON – As the summer sun graces the city of Mississauga, residents and visitors alike are eager to explore the extensive 500 kilometers of multi-use trails, park pathways, bike lanes, and marked cycling routes. Whether you prefer a traditional bicycle, an electric pedal-assist bicycle (e-bike), or an electric kick-style scooter (e-scooter), Mississauga offers a diverse range of options for everyone. Before you embark on your adventure, it’s crucial to familiarize yourself with the necessary safety tips, rules, and etiquette to ensure a positive and safe experience for all.

New Cycle Tracks for Enhanced Safety

This year, Mississauga has introduced its first set of cycle tracks, enhancing the city’s cycling infrastructure. Located on Argentia Road, from Tenth Line West to Winston Churchill Boulevard, and on Matheson Boulevard, from Creekbank Road to Commerce Boulevard, these cycle tracks provide a dedicated space for cyclists, e-scooter, and e-bike users. Separated from the main road by a curb and distinct from the sidewalk, these one-way tracks offer a safer and more comfortable environment for all road users.

Multi-Use and Park Trails

Mississauga’s multi-use trails are wide asphalt paths that replace sidewalks, running parallel to major roads and offering two-way travel for cyclists, pedestrians, and e-scooter and e-bike users. These trails promote shared use and encourage community engagement. Meanwhile, the park trails, both paved and unpaved, wind through the city’s scenic parks and conservation areas, providing a tranquil escape for outdoor enthusiasts. Some park trails are also accessible to e-scooter riders, further expanding the options for exploration.

Bike Lanes and Road Cycling

For those who prefer cycling directly on the road, Mississauga has marked bike lanes with signs and pavement markings. These lanes are designed for the one-way travel of cyclists, e-scooter, and e-bike users, ensuring a clear and designated space for riders. On roads without designated bike lanes, cyclists and e-bike users are permitted to ride, while e-scooter users must stick to roads with a speed limit of 50 km/h or less.

Safety First: Rules and Etiquette

Safety is paramount when exploring Mississauga’s trails and roads. E-bike users are required to wear a helmet, while cyclists and e-scooter users under 18 must also don protective headgear. However, wearing a helmet is strongly encouraged for all riders, regardless of age. E-bike and e-scooter users must be at least 16 years old, and speed limits are set at 24 km/h for e-scooters and 32 km/h for e-bikes.

Riders should stay alert and aware of their surroundings, obey all road rules, and avoid riding on sidewalks. Solo riding is recommended unless the device is built for two, and visibility is crucial – ensure your bike, e-bike, or e-scooter is equipped with a working bell, light, and reflectors. At night, a light is mandatory. Courteous behavior on trails includes keeping to the right, passing on the left with a signal, and avoiding blocking the trail during stops. Lastly, it is illegal to ride any of these devices under the influence of alcohol or drugs.

2024 Bike Challenge: Get Active and Give Back

Mississauga’s 2024 Bike Challenge invites residents to log their cycling kilometers until September. For every 50 kilometers logged, the City will plant a tree as part of the One Million Trees program. Participants can join Community Rides, rent e-bikes, or explore new trails to accumulate more distance. This initiative promotes physical activity while contributing to the city’s green spaces.

Shared E-Bikes and E-Scooters Now Available

In June 2024, Mississauga launched its first shared system of e-bikes and e-scooters, with up to 300 e-bikes and 900 e-scooters available for rent. Residents can easily access these devices using the Lime or Bird mobile apps, which provide information on cost, pick-up and drop-off locations, and safety guidelines.
