Destination Ontario Takes Pioneering Step in Sustainable Tourism

TORONTO – Destination Ontario has become the first provincial marketing organization in Canada to sign the Sustainable Tourism 2030 Pledge, a commitment to improving sustainability performance annually through the end of the decade. This move is part of the organization’s pursuit of certification through GreenStep Solutions, whose sustainability criteria are recognized by the Global Sustainable Tourism Council.

The pledge signifies a major milestone in Ontario’s efforts to ensure its tourism industry balances economic growth with environmental responsibility. Destination Ontario President and CEO Vincenza Ronaldi highlighted the importance of sustainability in shaping the future of tourism in the province.

“Sustainability is essential to the future of tourism in Ontario, and we are proud to lead by example in aligning our operations with global best practices,” said Ronaldi.

The Tourism Industry Association of Ontario (TIAO) has long supported sustainable practices and partnered with GreenStep Solutions to deliver sustainability certification programs to businesses across the province. Andrew Siegwart, President and CEO of TIAO, praised Destination Ontario’s leadership and expressed gratitude to GreenStep Solutions for their role in advancing sustainability efforts.

Angela Nagy, President and CEO of GreenStep Solutions, also commended Destination Ontario’s commitment, noting that it sets a precedent for other provincial marketing organizations across Canada.

“Leadership comes in many forms, and the Destination Ontario team is joining sustainability trailblazers from across Ontario in its efforts to measure and improve its performance,” said Nagy.

By embracing the Sustainable Tourism 2030 Pledge, Destination Ontario aims to inspire its industry partners to adopt responsible tourism practices, contributing to a broader vision of environmental stewardship in the sector.
