Denmark Stuns Canada 2–1 in Historic IIHF Quarterfinal Upset

Late goals by Ehlers and Olesen eliminate tournament favourites; Denmark advances to first-ever semifinal

HERNING, DENMARK — In a stunning turn of events at the 2025 IIHF Men’s World Championship, Team Canada was eliminated in the quarterfinals following a 2–1 loss to co-host Denmark. The defeat marks one of the most significant upsets in the tournament’s history, as Denmark secured their first-ever semifinal berth.

Canada dominated the early proceedings, outshooting Denmark 18–4 in the first period and 30–11 over the first two frames. However, Danish goaltender George Sørensen delivered a stellar performance, stopping 39 of 40 shots to keep his team within reach.

The Canadians broke the deadlock 5:17 into the third period when Travis Sanheim converted a feed from captain Sidney Crosby. Denmark responded with resilience; Nikolaj Ehlers tied the game with just over two minutes remaining, and Nick Olesen netted the game-winner with 49 seconds left on the clock.

Denmark’s victory propels them into the semifinals, where they will face Switzerland, who advanced after a 6–0 win over Austria. In the other semifinal, Sweden will take on the United States.
