Prime Minister Carney Names David Lametti and Vera Alexander to Key Diplomatic Posts
New appointments strengthen Canada’s presence at the UN and in Germany
Ottawa, Ontario — Prime Minister Mark Carney has announced two senior diplomatic appointments as part of Canada’s strategy to reinforce international partnerships and navigate rising global risks.
-
The Honourable David Lametti will become Canada’s next Ambassador and Permanent Representative to the United Nations, effective November 17, 2025.
-
Vera Alexander will be appointed as Ambassador of Canada to Germany in the coming weeks.
Both appointees bring decades of service and leadership to their new roles.
Honouring outgoing diplomats
Carney expressed gratitude to Bob Rae, Canada’s outgoing UN Ambassador, for his exemplary service during a critical period in world affairs. He also paid tribute to the late John Horgan, former Premier of British Columbia and Canada’s Ambassador to Germany, recognizing his contributions to strengthening bilateral ties before his passing.
Strategic global roles
The United Nations remains central to Canada’s foreign policy as a universal forum for advancing shared values and standards. In 2023, Canada contributed more than US$1.6 billion, making it the UN’s seventh-largest donor. Canada also hosts the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO), a UN specialized agency, in Montréal.
Germany, Europe’s largest economy and a fellow G7 partner, is one of Canada’s most significant allies. With two-way merchandise trade totalling $30.5 billion in 2024, Germany is Canada’s largest EU trading partner and sixth globally.
Prime Minister’s statement
Announcing the appointments, Carney highlighted their importance at a time of shifting geopolitics:
“Canada’s new government has a mandate to strengthen and diversify our international partnerships, relying on principled and effective leaders to represent the value of Canada’s strength in a rapidly transforming world. David Lametti and Vera Alexander are well-positioned to advance this mission, and I thank them for their continued service to Canada.”
Looking ahead
The appointments signal Canada’s continued effort to balance international engagement with domestic priorities, as Carney’s government seeks to project influence in global diplomacy while advancing trade, security, and economic interests abroad.
