Canada Post Workers Issue Strike Notice for May 23
OTTAWA — The Canadian Union of Postal Workers (CUPW) has issued a 72-hour strike notice, warning that job action could begin as early as Friday, May 23, 2025, if negotiations with Canada Post do not result in a fair agreement.
The union is demanding wage increases to match the rising cost of living, better protections against contracting out, and improvements to health and safety conditions for workers across the country.
“We don’t want to go on strike,” said CUPW National President Jan Simpson, “but we need to see serious movement from Canada Post at the bargaining table. Our members deserve wages that keep up with the cost of living, safer working conditions, and protection from job insecurity.”
The union emphasized that the goal remains a negotiated settlement, but noted that current offers do not meet the needs of frontline postal workers.
Canada Post has not yet publicly responded to the strike notice but previously signaled its desire to reach a deal that ensures the long-term sustainability of the postal service.
If the strike proceeds, it could disrupt mail and parcel delivery nationwide. However, essential services such as the delivery of pension and social assistance cheques are expected to continue.
Talks between the parties are ongoing.
