City of Toronto launches second round of Circular Food Innovators Fund to cut packaging waste

City of Toronto Circular Food Innovators Fund supports reusable food packaging solutions

TORONTO — The City of Toronto has opened applications for the second round of its Circular Food Innovators Fund (CFIF), offering new grants to help local businesses and non-profit organizations reduce single-use food packaging and expand reusable alternatives.

The program is now accepting applications until Sunday, March 1, with $275,000 in total funding available. Grants ranging from $5,000 to $35,000 will support projects that replace single-use and takeaway food packaging with reusable systems, while an additional funding stream will provide $500 to $5,000 for green workforce development and sustainability training in Toronto’s food and beverage sector.

Supporting a circular economy in Toronto’s food sector

First launched in 2024, the Circular Food Innovators Fund was created to help small businesses transition away from disposable packaging while supporting the City’s broader circular economy goals. According to the City, the initial funding round delivered measurable benefits, including reduced waste and emissions, improved operational efficiency, job creation and business growth.

In 2024, $262,500 was awarded to nine local organizations, enabling the adoption of reusable foodservice ware and innovative packaging models across Toronto. The City says the success of those projects informed the expansion of the program for 2026.

New focus on workforce training and sustainability skills

In addition to capital and operational grants, the second funding round introduces targeted support for workforce development. Eligible participants can apply for training funds aimed at building sustainability expertise within Toronto’s food and beverage industry, helping workers adapt to environmentally responsible business practices.

City Council approved the second round of CFIF funding in November 2025 as part of a key action under Toronto’s 10-Year Circular Economy Road Map, which outlines long-term strategies to reduce waste, increase reuse and lower emissions citywide.

Information sessions and application details

To support applicants, the City will host two virtual information sessions outlining eligibility requirements and application guidelines:

  • Monday, January 26, from noon to 1 p.m.

  • Wednesday, February 18, from 5 to 6 p.m.

Registration details and full program information are available on the City’s Circular Food Innovators Fund webpage.

Successful grant recipients are expected to be announced in summer 2026.
