Digital Underground Co-Founder Chopmaster J Returns with New Music and Podcast

SAN FRANCISCO – Hip hop pioneer Jimi “Chopmaster J” Dright, co-founder of the legendary group Digital Underground, is expanding his musical legacy with a slate of new projects in partnership with Intercept Music. For the first time in over 20 years, Chopmaster J is releasing new Digital Underground music while simultaneously launching his own solo material, a family-driven band project, and a podcast.

Four New Singles Released

Under his label imprints Herb n Soul Media and Digital Dope Music Group, Chopmaster J has dropped four singles across all major streaming platforms:

  • “Spirit” – featuring Dave Hollister, Tramaine Hawkins, and The Interfaith Gospel Choir, positioned as an official song for Oakland.

  • “Something About You” – featuring Dave Hollister and a cameo from the late Shock G.

  • “Whistle” – from the upcoming Digital Underground Next Generation (DUNxG) project.

  • “Move” – also from the forthcoming Digital Underground album Evolution.

Two singles, Spirit and Something About You, are part of Chopmaster J’s solo project Body of Works. Whistle and Move preview the new Digital Underground album, created with his son S.O.T.U. (Son of the Underground) and their band D.U.Nx.G.

A Family Legacy Continues

S.O.T.U. described his role in the new projects as a natural extension of his father’s legacy.

“My dad has always included me in his musical journey. As a kid, I remember his DU studio sessions. DUNxG is the next generation of Digital Underground and our music continues to elevate the highest of good vibrations,” he said.

Chopmaster J emphasized the support he has found through Intercept Music’s distribution and marketing platform.

“At times it’s been a serious uphill battle maintaining a hold on my music. I’m extremely happy with the support Intercept Music has provided me. Working alongside my son, S.O.T.U., has been an added blessing,” he shared.

Honouring Digital Underground’s Roots

Chopmaster J is credited with discovering a young Tupac Shakur during Digital Underground’s rise in the early 1990s. The group’s hits, including Doowutchyalike, Freaks of the Industry, Same Song, and Kiss You Back, helped shape West Coast hip hop. This new chapter marks a return to that cultural lineage while introducing a new generation of voices.

Ralph Tashjian, chairman of Intercept Music, highlighted the significance:

“Jimi and his bandmate Shock G were an integral component of the Bay Area’s music scene. Independent music and hip hop go hand in hand, and this venture represents generations of legacy.”

New Podcast: Like Father Like Fun

Adding another dimension, Chopmaster J and S.O.T.U. are co-hosting a new podcast, Like Father Like Fun, produced by Pantheon Media. The show is available on all major podcast platforms and on YouTube at @OfficialChopmasterJ.
