Chick-fil-A Canada Marks Major Milestone with 190,000 Meals Donated to Fight Hunger

Toronto, ON – Chick-fil-A Canada has reached a significant milestone in its hunger relief efforts, announcing more than 190,000 meals donated to communities nationwide through its Shared Table™ program.

The initiative, launched when Chick-fil-A entered the Canadian market in 2019, ensures that surplus food from restaurants is redirected to local non-profit organizations rather than discarded. With every Canadian Chick-fil-A location now participating, the program has become a consistent resource for shelters, food banks, and community meal programs.

Tackling Food Insecurity in Canada

Food insecurity continues to rise across the country. According to Food Banks Canada’s HungerCount 2024 report, visits to food banks topped 1.9 million in March 2024 alone, the highest level on record. More than one-third of those visits came from children.

Non-profits emphasize that corporate partnerships are vital to keeping their shelves stocked and programs running. By integrating surplus food donations into its operations, Chick-fil-A is helping to fill critical gaps.

A Shared Model of Support

The Shared Table™ program is structured to maximize both efficiency and impact. Unsold meals that remain safe to eat are collected by hunger-fighting organizations, who then distribute them to families and individuals in need.

Chick-fil-A reports that in addition to the 190,000 meals already shared in Canada, the company and its U.S. operations together have provided more than 200 million meals since 2020.

The program also addresses another growing issue: food waste. Since 2019, Chick-fil-A Canada has diverted over 87,000 kilograms of food from landfills. Environmental experts note that food waste accounts for about 8% of global greenhouse gas emissions, making waste reduction one of the fastest ways to address climate change.

Investment in Local Communities

Beyond meal donations, Chick-fil-A has made direct financial contributions to Canadian communities. Since 2020, the company has invested approximately C$2 million (US$1.46 million) to celebrate new restaurant openings, channeling funds toward hunger relief efforts.

Looking ahead, Chick-fil-A will invest an additional C$300,000 in 2026 to strengthen its Canadian partnerships. This includes:

  • Funding Second Harvest to expand surplus meal deliveries nationwide.

  • Providing grants to local non-profits that specialize in food security, allowing them to expand capacity and reach more people.

Second Harvest, Canada’s largest food rescue organization, has long advocated for sustainable solutions to hunger and food waste. Its collaboration with Chick-fil-A reflects a shared goal: ensuring that no good food goes to waste while helping millions of Canadians access nutritious meals.

Commitment to Hunger Relief and Sustainability

For Chick-fil-A, the Shared Table™ program is part of a broader philosophy of corporate responsibility. By pairing hunger relief with waste diversion, the company says it is creating a “double benefit” for Canadian communities: supporting people in need and reducing environmental impact.

As food bank demand continues to rise, sustained partnerships between businesses and non-profits will be critical. With 100% participation from its Canadian restaurants, Chick-fil-A is signaling its commitment to being part of the solution.
