Centennial Park Stadium Renamed in Honor of Former Mayor Rob Ford

Etobicoke – In a poignant ceremony held on Tuesday, the City of Toronto paid tribute to the enduring legacy of former Mayor Rob Ford by renaming Centennial Park Stadium in Etobicoke as the Rob Ford Stadium. The event, attended by dignitaries including Mayor Olivia Chow, the Honourable Doug Ford, Premier of Ontario, members of the Ford family, and local community leaders, marked what would have been Rob Ford’s 55th birthday.

Rob Ford, who served as the 64th Mayor of Toronto from 2010 to 2014, left an indelible mark on the city’s political landscape. Before and after his mayoral term, Ford represented Etobicoke North as a City Councillor, demonstrating unwavering dedication to his constituents until his passing in 2016 at the age of 46.

Mayor Olivia Chow expressed her heartfelt support for the renaming, acknowledging the emotional significance of the ceremony. “Today’s naming ceremony was a beautiful tribute to a long-serving public official. I personally know the pain of losing a loved one, which is why I supported the motion to rename the stadium. I understand what this means for the Ford family and I understand how difficult it is to lose someone so prematurely. I’m glad we were able to have this ceremony on the same day as Rob Ford’s birthday,” Mayor Chow remarked.

Premier Doug Ford, reflecting on his brother’s passion for public service, conveyed his family’s gratitude for the gesture. “Rob’s greatest joy was the chance to serve the people of Toronto and give back to his community, and that was especially true when it came to the young people he coached. Today’s renaming on what would have been Rob’s 55th birthday is a beautiful tribute to his legacy of public service and one that is deeply appreciated by our entire family, especially Rob’s kids, Dougie and Stephanie. I want to thank Mayor Chow, Councillor Ainslie, Councillor Carroll and all the other members of council for this incredibly thoughtful gesture,” Premier Doug Ford expressed.

The decision to rename the stadium came following a Toronto City Council motion in December 2023, further honoring Rob Ford’s contributions to the city. Details of the motion can be accessed on the City’s website.

Rob Ford’s dedication to serving the people of Toronto, coupled with his enduring commitment to his community, continues to resonate years after his passing. The renaming of Centennial Park Stadium to Rob Ford Stadium stands as a lasting testament to his impactful legacy and the profound mark he left on the city he loved.
