Centaur Theatre Revives Michel Tremblay’s Masterpiece “For the Pleasure of Seeing Her Again”
New production runs May 13 to June 1, directed by Alice Ronfard
MONTREAL, QC — Centaur Theatre will present a new production of For the Pleasure of Seeing Her Again by acclaimed Montreal playwright Michel Tremblay, running from May 13 to June 1, 2025, as part of its 56th season. The play is translated by Governor General’s Award-winner Linda Gaboriau and directed by Alice Ronfard, making her debut at Centaur Theatre.
The production features performances by Ellen David and Emmanuel Schwartz, two luminaries of the Montreal stage. First staged in English at Centaur in 1998, the play returns in a fresh staging that continues to honour the enduring legacy of Tremblay’s work.
“I am so honoured to be able to invite Alice Ronfard to Centaur Theatre to direct Michel Tremblay’s iconic play about his mother,” said Eda Holmes, Artistic and Executive Director of Centaur Theatre. “She is one of Quebec’s most renowned directors and brings a long creative relationship with Tremblay’s work, which will reveal it to our audience in a whole new way.”
For the Pleasure of Seeing Her Again is a touching and witty homage to Tremblay’s mother — a strong-willed and charismatic woman whose passion for storytelling and fierce wit inspired his love for literature and theatre. Set in working-class Montreal during the 1950s and 60s, the play explores family bonds, memory, and the formative power of maternal love.
The production also underscores the cultural importance of translating Quebecois works for English-speaking audiences. Gaboriau’s masterful translation offers a moving experience of Tremblay’s storytelling to a broader audience across Canada.
“It’s theatre as resurrection. Tremblay’s love for his mother, the creative force that brought an even more creative force into the world, is so strong that she will live on as long as theatres exist.” – The Gazette
