Prime Minister Carney Reaffirms Support for Ukraine and Calls for Just Peace Amid Ongoing Conflict

OTTAWA, ON — Prime Minister Mark Carney spoke today with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, reaffirming Canada’s unwavering support for Ukraine’s sovereignty and security. The leaders discussed the imperative of ending Russia’s war of aggression and advancing a just and lasting peace.

During the call, Prime Minister Carney and President Zelenskyy welcomed the leadership of President Donald Trump and the United States in contributing to upcoming peace negotiations. Prime Minister Carney also endorsed the recent joint statement issued by European leaders supporting these efforts.

The two leaders emphasized that:

  • All decisions regarding Ukraine’s future must be made by Ukrainians.

  • International borders cannot be changed by force.

  • Diplomatic efforts must be paired with continued pressure on Russia.

  • Ukraine must be provided with robust and credible security guarantees to defend its sovereignty.



Ongoing Canadian Support for Ukraine

Prime Minister Carney reaffirmed Canada’s continued military, financial, and humanitarian aid, including:

  • $2 billion in new military support

  • A $2.3 billion reconstruction loan to rebuild infrastructure and public systems

He also highlighted Canada’s recent work with allies to lower the price cap on Russian crude oil, a move aimed at weakening Russia’s war financing capabilities.


Return of Ukrainian Children

As Co-Chairs of the International Coalition for the Return of Ukrainian Children, Prime Minister Carney and President Zelenskyy renewed their call for the immediate and unconditional return of Ukrainian children unlawfully deported or forcibly transferred by Russia.


Canada’s Continued Commitment

Prime Minister Carney reiterated that Canada will continue close cooperation with:

  • The Coalition of the Willing

  • President Trump and the United States

  • President Zelenskyy and the people of Ukraine

Together, they remain committed to peace, stability, and the defense of Ukraine’s territorial integrity in Europe and beyond.
