Prime Minister Carney and President Zelenskyy Speak Ahead of G7 Summit, Reaffirm Canada’s Support for Ukraine
OTTAWA — Prime Minister Mark Carney held a diplomatic call today with President Volodymyr Zelenskyy of Ukraine, marking the first official conversation between the two leaders since Carney’s recent election victory.
President Zelenskyy began the conversation by congratulating Carney on his win, underscoring the significance of Canada’s democratic transition during a time of global uncertainty. In response, Prime Minister Carney reiterated Canada’s continued and unwavering support for Ukraine, particularly as the country endures the ongoing consequences of Russia’s invasion.
According to a readout from the Prime Minister’s Office, the leaders agreed that “a durable peace can only be achieved with Ukraine at the table,” reinforcing Canada’s position that any peace process must be led by and centered around Ukrainian sovereignty. Carney also emphasized that Canada remains committed to working alongside international partners to uphold international law and push for a just resolution to the war.
With the upcoming G7 Summit set to take place in Kananaskis, Alberta, in June, both Carney and Zelenskyy committed to remaining in close contact ahead of the meeting. The summit is expected to serve as a key moment for coordinated action among Western allies in support of Ukraine, and Zelenskyy is anticipated to attend either virtually or in person.
This conversation comes as Carney begins to shape Canada’s foreign policy approach during the early weeks of his tenure as Prime Minister. His reaffirmation of support for Ukraine aligns with the positions held by previous Canadian governments and signals continuity in Ottawa’s international commitments, particularly within NATO and the G7.
