Prime Minister Carney Concludes Working Visit to Washington, D.C.
Canada and the United States advance new trade, defence, and security cooperation during high-level meetings in Washington.
Ottawa — Prime Minister Mark Carney has concluded a working visit to Washington, D.C., where he met with U.S. President Donald J. Trump at the White House to advance shared priorities in trade, defence, and continental security.
The visit marked a continuation of Canada’s efforts to strengthen and modernize its economic and security relationship with the United States, building on last month’s consultations toward the upcoming review of the Canada-United States-Mexico Agreement (CUSMA).
Building a Stronger Economic Partnership
During their bilateral meeting, the Prime Minister and the President welcomed progress made to date in reinforcing cross-border trade and economic cooperation. According to the Prime Minister’s Office, 85% of Canada-U.S. trade is now tariff-free, making it the most advantageous trade relationship of any U.S. partner.
The leaders agreed to finalize new frameworks in the coming weeks for trade in steel, aluminium, and energy, areas both governments identified as essential to North American industrial strength.
“President Trump and I know that there are areas where our nations can compete – and areas where we will be stronger together,” Carney said. “We’re focused on building these new opportunities to create greater certainty, security, and prosperity for our workers and businesses.”
Cooperation in Defence and Arctic Security
Prime Minister Carney and President Trump also discussed expanded cooperation in defence, with particular attention to Arctic sovereignty and continental defence modernization.
Carney highlighted Canada’s upcoming Defence Industrial Strategy and increased investments in the Canadian Armed Forces, noting the potential for deeper collaboration in joint procurement, defence production, and Northern infrastructure.

Regional and Global Priorities
The Prime Minister and the President addressed pressing international developments, including the conflict in the Middle East, two years after the October 7, 2023 Hamas attacks. Carney thanked President Trump for his leadership on the peace process, referencing ongoing negotiations between Israel and Hamas in Egypt under the U.S.-backed peace plan.
Engagement with U.S. Leaders
Beyond the White House, Carney held meetings with senior U.S. lawmakers, including Senators Jim Risch, Jeanne Shaheen, Mike Crapo, and David McCormick, as well as Business Roundtable President and CEO Joshua Bolten. Discussions centred on maintaining North America’s economic competitiveness and ensuring CUSMA continues to support growth and opportunity for workers across both countries.
The Prime Minister also attended a private dinner with Vice President JD Vance and Second Lady Usha Vance, where the leaders discussed shared economic and security goals between Canada and the United States.
A Clear Objective for Canada
As Carney concluded his working visit, he reaffirmed that Canada’s new government remains focused on strengthening its economic foundation through collaboration and strategic partnerships.
“Our objectives are clear,” Carney said. “To protect Canadian workers and families, reinforce the competitiveness of Canadian businesses, and build the strongest economy in the G7.”
