Prime Minister Carney to Visit Washington for Talks with U.S. President Trump
The October 7 meeting will focus on economic and security cooperation as both countries prepare for a CUSMA review.
Ottawa — Prime Minister Mark Carney will make a working visit to Washington, D.C. next week for a meeting with U.S. President Donald J. Trump, the Government of Canada confirmed Friday.
Carney is scheduled to arrive in the U.S. capital on the evening of October 6, ahead of talks on October 7 that will address shared priorities in the evolving Canada–U.S. economic and security relationship.
Focus on CUSMA and Trade
The visit comes as both countries prepare for the first joint review of the Canada-United States-Mexico Agreement (CUSMA). Canada and the U.S. each launched consultations last month to inform the review process, which is expected to shape the future of North American trade.
CUSMA forms the world’s second-largest free trade region, generating economic growth and supporting high-quality careers across North America. The agreement covers nearly one-third of global GDP. Currently, 85 percent of Canada’s trade with the U.S. is tariff-free, and Canada holds the lowest average tariff rate of any American trading partner.
Strengthening Economic and Security Ties
The Prime Minister’s working visit is expected to highlight not only trade issues but also broader security cooperation, reflecting the new government’s commitment to strengthening Canada’s role as a reliable partner in a shifting global landscape.
More details on the outcomes of the Washington visit are expected following Carney’s talks with President Trump.
