🇨🇦🇦🇪 Carney and UAE President Discuss Deeper Ties in AI and Energy

Canada and the United Arab Emirates explore new areas for strategic cooperation

OTTAWA — Prime Minister Mark Carney held a bilateral call with His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, President of the United Arab Emirates, on June 12 to discuss opportunities for deeper collaboration in artificial intelligence and energy innovation.

According to a readout from the Prime Minister’s Office, Carney recognized the UAE’s global leadership in both AI and energy transformation, and reaffirmed Canada’s interest in expanding cooperation in these critical sectors.

The conversation marks a continuation of growing engagement between the two countries as both position themselves as emerging leaders in advanced technologies and clean energy within their respective regions.

🔋 AI and Energy: Shared Priorities

The UAE has rapidly advanced its national AI capabilities, hosting one of the world’s first ministries of artificial intelligence and investing heavily in data infrastructure and clean technology.

Canada, meanwhile, has doubled down on its AI safety and national security partnerships, including agreements with the UK and G7 allies. The call suggests Canada may look to bring the UAE into future tech diplomacy conversations, especially as Canada’s defence and innovation sectors expand under new federal priorities.

On energy, both countries share interests in carbon-neutral strategies, hydrogen development, and sustainable infrastructure, offering fertile ground for bilateral commercial and policy collaboration.

🗺️ Strategic Dialogue to Continue

While no formal initiatives were announced following the conversation, both leaders committed to remaining in contact, hinting at ongoing diplomatic engagement through upcoming multilateral forums, possibly including COP30 and future AI summits.

As Canada broadens its global diplomatic and trade networks, especially with innovation-driven economies in the Gulf and Indo-Pacific, the call reflects a strategic alignment with forward-looking partners like the UAE.
