Carney and Trump Pledge Continued Talks After First Official Meeting in Washington
WASHINGTON, D.C. — Prime Minister Mark Carney concluded his first official visit to the United States on Tuesday, meeting with President Donald J. Trump for wide-ranging discussions on trade, security, and the future of Canada-U.S. relations.
According to a statement from the Prime Minister’s Office, Carney thanked Trump for his hospitality and emphasized that “Canada and the United States are stronger when we work together.” The meeting marked Carney’s first in-person engagement with President Trump since taking office and comes amid heightened trade tensions across North America.
The two leaders discussed immediate economic pressures and agreed on the need for a renewed economic and security partnership. Carney reiterated Canada’s openness to building a relationship “based on respect, built on common interests, and to the benefit of both nations.”
The leaders agreed to continue their discussions in the weeks ahead and plan to meet again next month during the G7 Summit in Kananaskis, Alberta.
As Carney returns to Canada, his government is turning its focus to domestic priorities — including transforming border and Arctic security, increasing national defence investments, and building what he described as “the strongest economy in the G7.”
The Washington visit is viewed as a foundational step in redefining cross-border cooperation under the Carney administration, at a time when both nations face complex global and domestic challenges.
