Carney Speaks with Lebanon and U.S. Leaders on Middle East Crisis
OTTAWA — Prime Minister Mark Carney held separate discussions on March 8 with Lebanon’s Prime Minister Nawaf Salam and U.S. President Donald J. Trump, addressing the escalating conflict in the Middle East and broader economic and security issues affecting Canada and its international partners.
According to information released by the Prime Minister’s Office, the conversations highlighted Canada’s diplomatic engagement with key allies and partners as tensions continue to rise across the region.
Canada Expresses Solidarity with Lebanon
During his call with Lebanese Prime Minister Nawaf Salam, Carney reiterated Canada’s support for the government and people of Lebanon amid the widening regional conflict.
The Prime Minister expressed solidarity with Lebanon, noting the country has been drawn into the current crisis despite efforts to maintain stability.
Carney also voiced support for the Lebanese government’s decision to outlaw Hezbollah and Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, while reaffirming Canada’s longstanding position that Hezbollah must immediately halt its attacks on Israel.
The leaders discussed the need to reduce tensions and respect Lebanon’s sovereignty and territorial integrity. Carney further emphasized the importance of protecting international peacekeeping efforts in the region.
Canada reaffirmed its support for the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) and called on all parties to respect the safety and security of UN peacekeepers operating in the country.
The Prime Minister also pledged continued Canadian humanitarian support for Lebanon and the wider region, as humanitarian needs grow amid the conflict.

Both leaders agreed to remain in close contact as developments continue to unfold.
