Carney, Sheinbaum discuss trade, security, and CUSMA ahead of key review
Canada-Mexico relations deepen through trade, investment, and regional cooperation
OTTAWA — Prime Minister Mark Carney held a bilateral call with Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum, focusing on strengthening economic ties, advancing trade cooperation, and preparing for the upcoming review of the Canada-United States-Mexico Agreement (CUSMA).
The discussion reflects ongoing efforts by both countries to deepen collaboration across key sectors while addressing shared regional and global challenges.
Strengthening Canada-Mexico relations
Carney thanked Sheinbaum for Mexico’s cooperation following the recent death of a Canadian citizen at the Teotihuacán archaeological site earlier this week.
The leaders also highlighted progress in bilateral relations, including a recent Team Canada Trade Mission to Mexico that resulted in more than 20 commercial agreements. Carney welcomed Mexico’s upcoming trade mission to Canada, led by Secretary of Economy Marcelo Ebrard.
Expanding economic collaboration
Both leaders discussed opportunities to expand cooperation in strategic sectors such as:
- Critical minerals
- Clean technologies
- Energy
- Advanced manufacturing
They also welcomed a new memorandum of understanding focused on industrial health security and biomanufacturing, aimed at strengthening pharmaceutical supply chains.
Focus on CUSMA review
The call comes ahead of the scheduled review of CUSMA, which governs trade across North America.
Carney and Sheinbaum agreed to coordinate closely to address shared economic priorities and ensure stability and predictability for businesses and workers across the region.
Regional and global issues discussed
The leaders exchanged views on regional issues, including the humanitarian situation in Cuba, and discussed ongoing international efforts to support the Cuban population.
They also highlighted continued progress under the Canada-Mexico Action Plan, including collaboration on maritime corridors, cross-border trade, and innovation.
Looking ahead to the 2026 FIFA World Cup
Carney and Sheinbaum noted the upcoming 2026 FIFA World Cup, which will be jointly hosted by Canada, Mexico, and the United States.
The tournament is projected to contribute approximately $2 billion to the Canadian economy, further underscoring the importance of trilateral cooperation.
Continued engagement
Both leaders agreed to remain in close contact as Canada and Mexico continue to strengthen their partnership across economic, political, and regional priorities.
