Carney, Rutte Reaffirm NATO Unity in Bilateral Call

OTTAWA – Prime Minister Mark Carney held a bilateral call today with NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte, reinforcing Canada’s commitment to transatlantic security and ongoing support for Ukraine.

The conversation, which took place amid increasing global geopolitical tensions, focused on shared priorities including Euro-Atlantic security, military readiness, and deeper cooperation in defence innovation. The two leaders also discussed burden-sharing within the alliance and the need to bolster NATO’s industrial base as it adapts to current and future challenges.

Carney reiterated that NATO remains a “cornerstone” of Canada’s foreign and defence policy and emphasized the country’s continued contributions to collective capabilities across the alliance. Discussions also included Canada’s sustained role in supporting Ukraine in its self-defence against Russian aggression.

Both leaders agreed to stay in close contact as NATO approaches key strategic summits in the months ahead.
