Carney Qatar Call Focuses on De-Escalation and Civilian Protection

OTTAWA — Prime Minister Mark Carney spoke with the Amir of Qatar, His Highness Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, on March 9 as tensions continue to escalate across the Middle East following recent missile and drone attacks in the region.

According to the Prime Minister’s Office, the leaders condemned Iranian missile and drone strikes targeting Qatar and emphasized the urgent need to prevent further escalation of the conflict.

Canada Expresses Solidarity with Qatar

During the conversation, Carney expressed Canada’s solidarity with Qatar and praised the country’s defensive response to the attacks.

The Prime Minister also thanked Sheikh Tamim for his leadership in ensuring the safety of Canadians living in Qatar.

Canadian officials said Qatar has been working closely with Canada to help facilitate transportation options for Canadians wishing to leave the country amid the security situation.

Protecting Civilians and Regional Stability

Both leaders emphasized the importance of protecting civilians and civilian infrastructure across the region.

Carney and Sheikh Tamim called for an immediate end to attacks that target non-military infrastructure, warning that continued violence risks further destabilizing the region and worsening global economic and energy conditions.

The Prime Minister also reaffirmed Canada’s support for the security and territorial sovereignty of Qatar and its regional partners.
