John Hamm Tribute Honours a Lifetime of Public Service
OTTAWA — Prime Minister Mark Carney is paying tribute to former Nova Scotia Premier John Hamm, remembering him as a principled public servant whose leadership helped shape modern Nova Scotia through health-care reform, fiscal responsibility and a commitment to public service.
In a statement issued July 13 following Hamm’s passing, Carney extended condolences to the former premier’s family, friends and the people of Nova Scotia, recognizing a political career that spanned decades in both medicine and public office.
The Prime Minister said Hamm devoted his life to serving Canadians, first as a physician and later as a provincial and national political leader whose work left a lasting impact on Nova Scotia.
From Physician to Premier
Before entering politics, Hamm practised medicine in Nova Scotia, bringing a physician’s perspective to public policy and health-care issues.
He was first elected to the Nova Scotia Legislature in 1984 and later became leader of the Progressive Conservative Party of Nova Scotia.
In 1999, Hamm led the Progressive Conservatives to victory, becoming the province’s 24th premier.
During his time in office, his government focused on restoring fiscal stability while pursuing reforms to Nova Scotia’s health-care system and public services.
Recognizing a Lasting Legacy
Carney said Hamm’s leadership helped position Nova Scotia for long-term growth while emphasizing responsible government and economic stability.
The Prime Minister noted that Hamm earned respect across party lines for his professionalism, integrity and dedication to public service.
His career, Carney said, demonstrated a lifelong commitment to improving the lives of Nova Scotians through both medicine and politics.
The statement also recognized Hamm’s continued contributions to public life following his time as premier, including his willingness to share his experience on public policy and governance.
Condolences to Family and Nova Scotians
Carney extended condolences on behalf of the Government of Canada to Hamm’s family, friends, former colleagues and all Nova Scotians mourning his passing.
He said Canadians will remember Hamm for his compassion, thoughtful leadership and commitment to serving the public interest.
The Prime Minister added that Hamm’s contributions to Nova Scotia and Canada will continue to be recognized through the institutions and communities he helped strengthen during decades of public service.
Hamm served as Premier of Nova Scotia from 1999 until 2006 and remained an influential voice in public affairs following his retirement from elected office.
