Carney, Pakistan PM discuss Middle East ceasefire, trade ties

Middle East ceasefire discussions lead Carney-Pakistan talks on security and trade

OTTAWA — Prime Minister Mark Carney held a call Monday with Pakistan’s Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, focusing on escalating tensions in the Middle East and opportunities to strengthen bilateral economic ties, according to a statement from the Prime Minister’s Office.

During the discussion, both leaders stressed the urgency of de-escalation in the region and the need for a sustained ceasefire. Prime Minister Carney acknowledged Pakistan’s role in facilitating early discussions between the United States and Iran, describing it as a key strategic contribution to regional diplomacy. He also underscored that any ceasefire efforts should extend to Lebanon.

The leaders highlighted the importance of maintaining free and secure access through the Strait of Hormuz, a critical global energy corridor, while emphasizing the protection of civilians and infrastructure across the Gulf region.

Beyond security concerns, the conversation also focused on strengthening Canada-Pakistan economic relations. Both leaders expressed interest in expanding trade and investment opportunities and confirmed plans to continue discussions on a foreign investment protection agreement, with the next round of talks expected in June.

The call reflects Canada’s ongoing efforts to engage international partners on both geopolitical stability and economic cooperation in an increasingly complex global environment.

Prime Minister Carney and Prime Minister Sharif agreed to remain in close contact as developments in the Middle East continue.
