Carney and Norway’s Støre Discuss Arctic Security and Ukraine Peace Efforts

OTTAWA — Prime Minister Mark Carney spoke Friday with Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre, reaffirming the strong relationship between Canada and Norway and committing to deeper cooperation on Arctic and transatlantic security.

In their first official conversation since Carney’s election, Støre extended congratulations and welcomed Canada’s renewed focus on shared global challenges. The two leaders discussed the importance of deepening trade and commercial ties, particularly in the context of energy transition, ocean innovation, and defence collaboration.

Both leaders highlighted the critical importance of Arctic security, where Canada and Norway share strategic interests as northern nations and key NATO allies. The conversation also included a shared commitment to supporting Ukraine’s sovereignty and a just and lasting peace grounded in international law and territorial integrity.

The call reinforced Canada and Norway’s longstanding alignment on multilateralism, climate policy, and global stability. The prime ministers agreed to remain in close contact and explore new areas of bilateral engagement in the months ahead.
