Carney Strengthens Ties with New Zealand and EU in Weekend Diplomacy Push

OTTAWA — Prime Minister Mark Carney spoke over the weekend with two key international leaders — New Zealand Prime Minister Christopher Luxon and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen — as part of his early efforts to reinforce Canada’s global partnerships.

In separate calls on Saturday and Sunday, Carney received congratulations on his election win and discussed shared priorities with both leaders.

With Prime Minister Luxon, the focus was on expanding trade and commercial ties between Canada and New Zealand, and emphasizing the importance of maintaining a free and open Indo-Pacific region. Both countries are members of the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP) and are aligned on regional security and multilateral cooperation.

In his call with President von der Leyen, Carney reaffirmed the close relationship between Canada and the European Union. The leaders discussed enhancing the existing Canada-EU free trade agreement and exploring further cooperation in economic security, defence, and global stability.

Both conversations reflect Carney’s early engagement on international affairs, signaling a commitment to strengthening Canada’s role in key alliances. The Prime Minister’s Office noted that all parties agreed to remain in close contact as work continues across diplomatic, trade, and security priorities.
