Carney Names Mark Gerretsen as Chief Government Whip

OTTAWA — Prime Minister Mark Carney has appointed Mark Gerretsen, Member of Parliament for Kingston and the Islands, as Chief Government Whip as the new Parliament prepares to convene on May 26.

Gerretsen, first elected in 2015, brings experience from several key parliamentary roles, including Deputy Government House Leader and Parliamentary Secretary to the Leader of the Government in the House of Commons. He has also served on multiple parliamentary committees during his tenure.

In announcing the appointment, Carney emphasized the importance of disciplined and collaborative governance as his government moves forward on its agenda to deliver the change Canadians voted for.

“The decisions made by this new Parliament, starting on May 26, 2025, will be decisive for Canada’s future,” Carney stated. “We will govern constructively and collaboratively, working with Caucus and across parties in Parliament to deliver the change that Canadians voted for.”

As Chief Government Whip, Gerretsen will be responsible for party discipline, ensuring support for government legislation, and coordinating parliamentary strategy with caucus members.
