Carney Calls for De-Escalation as Middle East Conflict Intensifies

Prime Minister urges respect for international law amid evolving Middle East situation

SYDNEY, Australia — Prime Minister Mark Carney issued a statement Tuesday addressing the rapidly evolving situation in the Middle East, reaffirming Canada’s longstanding position on Iran while calling for urgent de-escalation and renewed diplomatic engagement.

In remarks released March 3, 2026, the Prime Minister described Iran as a principal source of instability in the region and reiterated Canada’s concerns over Tehran’s nuclear program and regional activities.

Canada Reaffirms Position on Iran

Carney stated that despite more than two decades of negotiations and diplomatic efforts, Iran has neither dismantled its nuclear program nor halted enrichment activities. He emphasized that Canada has consistently supported efforts aimed at preventing Iran from obtaining a nuclear weapon.

The Prime Minister also referenced Canada’s broader sanctions framework and previous international measures targeting Iranian entities and individuals.

“Canada stands with the Iranian people in their long and courageous struggle against the regime’s oppressive rule,” Carney said, underscoring Ottawa’s distinction between the Iranian government and its citizens.

Condemnation of Civilian Attacks

Carney condemned strikes carried out by Iran on civilians and civilian infrastructure across the Middle East. At the same time, he urged all parties — including the United States and Israel — to respect international law and the rules governing armed conflict.

The statement acknowledged growing threats to civilian life and warned of the risks of a widening regional conflict.

“International law binds all belligerents,” the Prime Minister said, calling on all actors involved to prioritize civilian protection.

Call for Rapid De-Escalation

While reiterating Canada’s position on Iran’s nuclear threat, Carney also expressed concern over the broader breakdown of international mechanisms designed to manage such crises, including United Nations Security Council processes and International Atomic Energy Agency oversight.

Canada is calling for a rapid de-escalation of hostilities and has signaled its readiness to assist in diplomatic efforts aimed at stabilizing the situation.

“Diplomatic engagement is essential to avoid a wider and deeper conflict,” the Prime Minister stated, emphasizing that long-term resolution requires political agreements addressing nuclear proliferation and regional extremism.

Canada’s Diplomatic Approach

The Prime Minister confirmed that Canada will continue coordinating with like-minded countries and international partners to pursue a diplomatic path forward.

Ottawa’s position, as outlined in the statement, balances condemnation of civilian attacks with a renewed push for dialogue, signaling Canada’s intent to remain engaged in multilateral efforts aimed at restoring stability.
