Canada Urges Caution as Middle East Tensions Escalate
Carney Middle East Statement Reaffirms Canada’s Position on Iran
MUMBAI, India — Prime Minister Mark Carney and Foreign Affairs Minister Anita Anand have issued a joint statement addressing escalating Iran-related hostilities across the Middle East, urging Canadians in the region to exercise extreme caution and follow local safety guidance.
In a statement released February 28, 2026, the Prime Minister’s Office confirmed the federal government is “closely following” developments and advised all Canadians currently in Iran to shelter in place. Canadians in the broader Middle East were urged to follow local authorities’ instructions and take necessary precautions.
Canada’s Position on Iran
The statement reiterates Canada’s longstanding position that the Islamic Republic of Iran remains “the principal source of instability and terror throughout the Middle East” and must not be permitted to obtain or develop nuclear weapons.
Ottawa pointed to previous international diplomatic efforts, including discussions at the 2025 G7 Leaders’ Summit in Kananaskis and the United Nations’ reimposition of sanctions in September 2025, aimed at curbing Iran’s nuclear program. According to the statement, Iran has not fully dismantled its nuclear program, halted enrichment activities, or ceased support for regional proxy groups.
Canada has formally listed the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) as a terrorist entity. To date, Ottawa has sanctioned 256 Iranian entities and 222 individuals in response to human rights abuses and actions it says threaten regional and international security.

Support for Israel and U.S. Actions
The federal government reaffirmed Israel’s right to defend itself and ensure the safety of its citizens. Canada also stated its support for the United States acting to prevent Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons and from further destabilizing the region.
At the same time, the statement emphasized the need to protect civilians amid the unfolding conflict. “The Canadian government urges the protection of all civilians in this conflict,” the statement reads, adding that Ottawa will take “all possible measures” to safeguard Canadian nationals and diplomatic missions throughout the region.
Safety Advisory for Canadians
Global Affairs Canada continues to monitor the situation and has advised Canadians abroad to register with the Registration of Canadians Abroad service. Travellers are encouraged to consult official travel advisories and maintain close contact with Canadian consular services where available.
The Prime Minister’s Office said the government will continue coordinating with international partners as the situation evolves.
