Prime Minister Carney Meets with UN Secretary-General and Namibia’s President at UN General Assembly
Talks focused on peace in the Middle East, support for Ukraine, and strengthening Canada–Africa partnerships
New York City — Prime Minister Mark Carney held bilateral meetings with United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres and Namibia’s President Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah on the margins of the 80th Session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA). The discussions highlighted Canada’s priorities on peace, humanitarian relief, and building new global partnerships.

Meeting with UN Secretary-General António Guterres
Carney reaffirmed Canada’s strong support for the UN and its principles of peace, security, sustainable development, and human rights. He and Guterres discussed urgent crises, including:

Middle East: Both emphasized the need for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza, the release of hostages, protection of civilians, and scaled-up humanitarian aid. Carney reinforced Canada’s formal recognition of the State of Palestine, announced earlier in the day, as part of a long-term commitment to a two-state solution.

Ukraine: The leaders stressed the importance of achieving a just and durable peace that ensures Ukraine’s long-term security in the face of Russia’s aggression.

Haiti: Carney and Guterres underscored the urgency of a strengthened multilateral response to Haiti’s security and humanitarian crisis.
The Prime Minister and the Secretary-General agreed to maintain close contact as these crises evolve.
Meeting with Namibia’s President Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah
In a separate meeting, Carney and President Nandi-Ndaitwah explored opportunities to deepen Canada–Namibia relations, with a focus on:

Expanding trade and investment between the two countries.

Building partnerships in natural resource development and clean technology to create jobs and drive sustainable economic growth.

Supporting the Women, Peace and Security agenda, highlighting both nations’ commitment to gender equality in peace building.

The leaders agreed to continue engagement and strengthen collaboration in the months ahead.
