Carney Meets U.S. Vice President JD Vance to Advance Economic and Security Priorities
ROME, ITALY — Prime Minister Mark Carney met on Sunday with United States Vice President JD Vance, continuing the dialogue between the two leaders as Canada and the U.S. navigate shared challenges and chart a course toward a renewed economic and security partnership.
The meeting follows Carney’s earlier visit to the White House this month and comes during his diplomatic engagements in Rome surrounding the inaugural Mass of Pope Leo XIV.

During their conversation, Carney reaffirmed the enduring Canada-U.S. partnership, stating that both countries are “stronger when we work together.” The two leaders discussed coordinated efforts to enhance border security, confront the growing threat of fentanyl, and increase joint investments in defence and public safety.
They also addressed the immediate trade pressures facing both nations and stressed the need to build a new bilateral framework that better reflects today’s economic and geopolitical realities.
The leaders agreed to remain in close contact as their governments work to deepen cooperation across these key areas.
