Carney Marks Labour Day with Tribute to Canadian Workers and Unions

Prime Minister highlights organized labour’s role in building a fairer economy and commits to supporting high-paying careers

OTTAWA — Prime Minister Mark Carney issued a Labour Day statement on Monday, paying tribute to Canadian workers and the historic contributions of unions to the country’s economic and social foundations.

Carney emphasized that Canadian workers remain central to building the country’s future, noting their resilience in an era of global change.

Recognizing the Role of Unions

The Prime Minister underlined the historic role of unions in securing benefits that Canadians now take for granted, including minimum wages, weekends, safe workplaces, and worker protections.

He praised unions for advancing the principle of fairness: “what we wish for ourselves, we wish for all.”

Workers at the Heart of Economic Strategy

Carney linked the Labour Day message to his government’s broader economic agenda, highlighting its focus on ensuring workers have the skills, support, and opportunities to succeed in a changing global economy.

The government, he said, is working closely with organized labour to create high-paying careers that provide long-term opportunity and prosperity, not just short-term jobs.

A Shared Mission

Framing workers as the foundation of Canada’s economic strength, Carney stated that his government’s mission is to “build Canada strong, with workers at the heart of that mission.”

By aligning with unions, he argued, Canada can meet the challenges of technological transformation, energy transition, and global competition while safeguarding fairness and dignity for all workers.
